Saturday, July 20 - Ladies Conference

Today was a Ladies Conference that was held here at the college.

The lawn chairs covered up - made it look fancier

The first speaker.  Notice how the translator has to flip back and forth between English and Zulu - it was quite difficult to follow

The theme of the conference was “The Beauty of a Christian Women” with two topics – one about faith and one about prayer.  The conference started at 11:00 so I had plenty of time to relax.

Our MC

The conference started off with the topic about faith.  However, it was not as anyone expected.  As the translator said – it was hard translating for someone who was not really using Scriptures.  As well, he switched between Zulu and English, so it was very difficult to follow.  However, it was neat listening to him as he is a traditional South African preacher with a lot of ‘Hallejuhs’ and ‘Amens’ being added by the crowd.  Following this we had tea.  This was served at 12:00 and besides tea, there were also sandwiches with peanut butter or some sort of rolls offered.  I used this as a light lunch, as lunch wasn’t going to be served until 2.  After tea, we had our second topic about prayer.  This topic had a lot more substance and we discussed when to pray, how to pray, who to pray, why to pray, etc.  One part that stuck out to me was all the promises (or “I will’s) that God gives in the book of Hosea.  Interspersed throughout the conference was singing.

If someone was asked to open for lunch or to introduce a speaker, they would start off with a short song.  The singing is very beautiful and I attempted to record it, but it is not as good is in real.  Typically a lady will be the leader and she will start off the song.  Then everyone will join in, but the leader will continue to lead and will often have a different refrain or section than everyone else.  It is really neat to hear.  I videoed some of the singing, but I deleted it, so I'm hoping to get some of the songs from another person.

I took this picture to show the size of the pan they use for making rice with - it was absolutely huge!!
